I spent the rest of the morning in my room. If I had no answers concerning my personal life, then I could at least take control of my stomach and Kate’s, too. I grabbed my wallet, the keys to the Bird, and set out to find food. She fired up on the first try and rumbled.

Man, that was a pretty sound.

Carefully, I backed up and drove out of the driveway and onto the gravel. I went slow and deliberate. Eventually, asphalt returned, and I remembered how Deena had come to Kate’s house. We had turned left at the light, but it had looked like there was more shopping and retail further into town.

Stopping at the gas station, I topped off the tank and ran inside to buy a pack of smokes and a soda. I continued to follow the main thoroughfare into the historic district and spotted the corner grocery store.

As I parked and exited the car, I was shocked to see Kate’s Kitchen across the street as I lit a smoke. I dialed the number on the sign. Much to my surprise, Kate answered. I had to say something and quick. I wasn’t even sure why I had called the number, maybe to be nosey, or just curious about my only connection in the town.

“Do you prefer red or white wine?”

“Always white,” she giggled.

“Thank you very much, Ms. Capri.”

There was a brief, noticeable pause before she said, “1976.” And click, she hung up the phone.

Kate might have been playing hard to get, but I was a determined son of a bitch even back then. I would show off my culinary skills by making the chef dinner as a thank-you-for-keeping-me-for-the-night gesture. Afterward, I planned to call a taxi and leave.

The store was sufficient with necessities. I was making her Fettucine Alfredo, Minestrone, and berries with cream sauce for dessert. I bought popcorn for the next movie night but then remembered; I was leaving. I didn’t do well in limbo.

… Unless the limbo was how Kate always was.
